The Famous Blue Train: Kandy to Ella Railway Journey

Experience one of the world's most scenic train rides through tea plantations and mountain valleys.

Blue Train Kandy to Ella

Often described as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, the ride from Kandy to Ella is a highlight of any Sri Lanka trip. This 7-hour journey takes you through lush tea plantations, across towering viaducts, and past cascading waterfalls in the heart of the Hill Country.

The Route

The journey covers approximately 140 kilometers, winding through the central highlands from Kandy (elevation 500m) up to Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya at 1,900m) before descending to Ella (elevation 1,041m). The track passes through some of the most scenic landscapes Sri Lanka has to offer.

Highlights of the Journey

1. Tea Plantations

For much of the journey, the train winds through endless emerald tea gardens. You'll see tea pluckers at work, their colorful saris dotting the landscape, and smell the fresh aroma of tea leaves. This is the heart of Ceylon tea country.

2. Nine Arch Bridge

Just before reaching Ella, the train crosses the famous Nine Arch Bridge - a stunning colonial-era viaduct built entirely of stone and brick without any steel. The bridge is especially photogenic when surrounded by mist and lush greenery.

3. Stations Along the Way

The train stops at several charming stations including Peradeniya, Gampola, Nawalapitiya, Hatton (for Adam's Peak), Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya), and Haputale, each offering glimpses into local life in the hills.

Ticket Classes

Third class is crowded but authentic and cheapest. Second class offers reserved seats with fans. First class Observation Saloon has large windows and fewer passengers - book well in advance as these tickets sell out quickly. The open doors and windows in second/third class offer the best views and photo opportunities.

Booking Tips

  • Book first class tickets 30 days in advance online or through authorized agents
  • Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes early
  • Sit on the right side going up (Kandy to Ella) for better views
  • Bring snacks and water - the journey is long
