With over 1,300 kilometers of coastline, Sri Lanka is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the Indian Ocean. From world-class surfing spots to tranquil bays perfect for swimming, here's our guide to the best beaches the island has to offer.
South Coast
Mirissa
The most popular beach on the south coast, Mirissa is famous for whale watching (December to April), surfing, and its crescent-shaped bay. The palm-fringed shore and chill vibe make it perfect for unwinding. Don't miss the sunset from Parrot Rock.
Unawatuna
This golden-sand beach near Galle is sheltered by a reef, making it calm for swimming year-round. The beach is lined with restaurants and guesthouses, and the nearby Japanese Peace Pagoda offers panoramic ocean views.
Hiriketiya
A relatively new discovery, this horseshoe-shaped bay near Dikwella is becoming popular with surfers and digital nomads. The bay is calm and safe for swimming, with several cafes and surf schools along the beach.
East Coast
Arugam Bay
Considered one of the best surfing spots in the world, Arugam Bay attracts surfers from across the globe. The season runs from April to September (opposite to the south). Even if you don't surf, the laid-back atmosphere and stunning coastline are worth the visit.
Nilaveli
Located near Trincomalee, Nilaveli boasts pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Pigeon Island National Park, just off the coast, offers excellent coral reefs and marine life.
West Coast
Bentota
A popular resort town with luxury hotels, Bentota offers water sports, river safaris on the Bentota River, and turtle hatcheries. The beach is wide and sandy, perfect for long walks.
Hikkaduwa
One of the earliest beach destinations in Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa is known for its coral reefs (great for snorkeling), sea turtle sightings, and vibrant nightlife. The coral sanctuary here is a must-visit for marine life enthusiasts.
